However, this will no longer be allowed. The West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission has taken strict action.
On Monday, at Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium, the Commission held a meeting with insurance companies. It was clearly stated that once a patient is discharged, they cannot be detained for billing purposes. This has been a frequent issue, but the Commission emphasized that under no circumstances should a discharged patient be held back.
During the meeting, insurance companies were instructed to resolve this issue among themselves. Although 11 companies were invited, representatives from 9 attended. It was decided that a core committee would be formed with representatives from 6 companies. If any complaints arise, the Commission will coordinate with this committee. Insurance companies also mentioned that daycare procedures will now be included under insurance coverage.
While the Commission issued several directives to insurance companies, the companies too voiced their concerns. They reported facing numerous fake claims, where the same treatment is billed differently at different hospitals. Even within hospitals under the same group, different bills are being raised for the same illness.
All in all, it is clear that the Commission is determined to eliminate every form of malpractice from the state’s healthcare sector.
