A warehouse under the World Food Programme (WFP) of the United Nations, which stored food and supplies for famine-stricken people, was looted. The incident occurred at the Al-Ghafari warehouse in the Deir al-Balah area. The WFP confirmed the looting in an official statement.
Sanjana Lahiri, Reporter – Palestinians in Gaza are facing dire hunger. Driven by desperation, a group of starving Palestinians stormed and looted a UN food storage facility. The United Nations had been providing humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza. One of the warehouses in the Gaza Strip, stocked with food, was targeted in the incident.
Before the food could be officially distributed, thousands of people gathered near the warehouse. As the crowd grew restless, they broke doors and windows, forcing their way inside and ripping open bags and packages of food, grabbing whatever they could. In the resulting chaos and stampede, several people were trampled, and at least two deaths have been reported. Many others were injured.
According to the WFP statement, the food and aid supplies were meant for famine-stricken residents. The incident took place at the Al-Ghafari warehouse in Deir al-Balah. The WFP noted that news of an upcoming food distribution prompted the massive crowd to gather early at the site. People had reportedly been lining up in anticipation.
However, how the crowd broke through the lines, and how they managed to break open the gates and windows, remains unclear. Once inside, people took whatever they could. Those who came away empty-handed attempted to grab supplies from those who managed to get something, which led to scuffles and further chaos between the groups.
