U.S. President Donald Trump seems to view himself as Russia’s self-declared protector. Once again taking a jibe at Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump claimed that Putin is playing with fire.
Sayantika Bandopadhyay, Reporter – Despite Russia’s verbal commitment to a ceasefire, its actions say otherwise. Military operations in Ukraine continue. Amid reports that Russian forces have seized control of several Ukrainian regions, Trump warned that Putin is playing with fire, adding that the consequences won’t be good.
Russia has made gains in northwestern Ukraine but is not showing any intent to pursue a ceasefire. Instead, it seems determined to continue military action. Over the past three years of war, Russia has launched some of the deadliest drone and missile attacks on Ukraine. Amid growing global frustration, Trump criticized the Russian president on social media, writing:
“What Vladimir Putin doesn’t realize is that if I weren’t around, some really bad things would’ve already happened in Russia — and I mean REALLY bad. He is playing with fire.”
This statement implies that Trump believes Russia would have faced destruction without him. Since launching his bid for a second term as U.S. President, Trump has made efforts to improve relations with Russia and has also tried to mediate an end to the Russia-Ukraine war. He has held face-to-face meetings with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Putin, and has engaged in frequent phone calls with both leaders.
From the start, Trump has maintained, “I don’t like war.”
However, there are no signs that the Russia-Ukraine war is nearing an end. On the contrary, Russia has been escalating its attacks almost daily.
Meanwhile, Russia appears unbothered by Trump’s comments and is instead focused on advancing in Ukraine. Moscow has claimed that 1,475 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in military operations in the past 24 hours. According to a statement from Russia’s Defense Ministry, their forces have liberated the settlement of Staraya Nikolaevka in the Donetsk region. They also claim successes in Kharkiv, carrying out drone and missile strikes on multiple Ukrainian cities.
